Torrelavega schools bet on innovation to improve recycling data

The “Responsible Recycling Challenge” campaign is an initiative promoted by the public company Aguas de Torrelavega and the Torrelavega City Council, in collaboration with Candam Tech. This campaign aims to improve packaging recycling practices in the municipality, involving primary school students and their families.

Thanks to the implementation of advanced Recysmart technology, the project not only encourages the recycling of packaging, but also turns this habit into an interactive activity with the user in which they can obtain rewards.

What is Recysmart?

Recysmart is an IoT device capable of transforming any urban waste bin into a smart one. This solution allows both users and deposited waste to be identified, making it easy to track recycling activities in detail and give rewards to the most active participants.

Recysmart allows you to set up different recycling schemes such as: Pay as You Throw (PAYT), Reward as You Throw (RAYT) or Deposit and Return Schemes (DRS).

What does the project consist of?

For the development of this project, 20 Recysmart devices were installed in glass and light packaging containers, located in 10 recycling points near the primary schools of Torrelavega.

The mechanics of the contest are simple, get recycling points for each recycled package in the corresponding bin. The schools and students who were the most recyclers during the development of the project were eligible for several coupons that could be exchanged for school supplies in the local businesses of Torrelavega.

To participate, students and their families could identify themselves using a card provided by the school, or through the Recysmart App. Each recycling action adds points, both individually and for the participant’s educational center.

The accumulated points can be viewed through the Recysmart app, and you can also see the environmental benefits obtained through recycling.
