Mutriku is the setting for the first RecySmart project in the Basque Country, which represents an important achievement for Candam.

The initiative focuses on recycling lightweight packaging and offers citizens the opportunity to participate in an exciting pilot.

The RecySmart smart device was implemented in the yellow bins, corresponding to light packaging: plastic bottles, cans and carton briks.

Each properly deposited container adds one point. At the end of each month, the resident or residents with the most points receive prizes. 

What does the project consist of? 

The main objective of this initiative is to improve light packaging recovery rates in Mutriku. Although the town has already shown excellent results in this regard, they aspire to further boost its environmental performance.  

Neighbors who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to recycling are rewarded each month with different prizes such as baskets full of local Mutriku products, coupons to redeem at local businesses, and more.

This innovative measure not only encourages care for the environment, but also supports the local community by highlighting its products. 

Community participation will be very important to ensure the success of this pilot test, which could serve as a model for other towns in Debabarrena in the future.

The project began in May and will last for a minimum of one year. This experience will not only allow Mutriku to stand out as a pioneer in recycling but will also lay the foundation for a more effective and sustainable approach towards environmental management across the region

In addition, the success of this project could mean that in the future the installed devices will be used to implement a pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) system in the Commonwealth, making it possible to comply with Law 7/2022 on Waste and Contaminated Soil for a Circular Economy.
