The Spanish capital is committed to more efficient waste management to become a benchmark Smart City, a smarter and more sustainable city. For this purpose, Madrid will install 11,100 filling sensors together with the powerful Smart Waste Management platform in the first four months of 2023. The implementation will allow working with Dynamic Optimised Routes, a comprehensive smart waste management solution from Sensoneo.
The joint venture formed by Valoriza, Acciona, and OHL Ingesan has been awarded Lot 2 of the waste collection service contract for the city of Madrid. As the use of filling sensors was favorably valued in order to optimize collection, the UTE has chosen Sensoneo sensors supplied in Iberia by Candam.
Why is the solution offered by Candam?
In addition to robust sensors, the platform is one of the few that has managed to provide a powerful Dynamic Route Optimisation engine for waste management. The big difference with other platforms is that it is the only one that has adapted the most commonly used last-mile navigation systems to waste collection. With this, the navigation is designed specifically for collection vehicles and takes into account blind spots, pedestrian walkways, real-time updates, and more. But it is not always about automation, so the platform is flexible for the expert operator to manually customize routes, such as adding holiday collection points, or adding a one-off stop on demand (e.g. a Hospital).
The implementation of these smart sensors will help the Madrid City Council to make the waste collection service much more efficient in an imminent way, also achieving objectives such as:
- The reduction of emissions
- Traffic reduction
- Noise reduction
Managers will also achieve benefits that are passed on in the contract and ultimately to the citizen such as:
- Fuel savings
- Time reduction
- Cost savings
The sensors are validated worldwide with more than 400 projects in 5 continents and 82 countries.
What is the filling sensor technology and the Smart Waste Management platform?
Data on container fill levels are sent to Smart Waste’s IoT platform. The sensors use a variety of IoT networks (NB-IoT, Sigfox, LoRaWAN, etc.), providing the customer with the data needed to make decisions on waste collection routes, frequencies, vehicle loads, etc.
The powerful cloud-based platform helps customers to configure, monitor and plan daily waste management activities and belongs to one of the best waste management software on the market today.
The customer sees all containers on a digital map and through the street view, including:
- the capacity
- the type of waste
- the last measurement
- GPS location
- the collection schedule or acknowledgment
In the case of containers with intelligent sensors it can:
- install and configure the sensors
- monitor the fill level in real time
- view forecasts
- plan collection routes
- view collection reports
- manage citizen reports
You can integrate smart waste data into your existing IS through APIs.
The benefits:
- Real-time waste monitoring
- Container filling forecasts
- Detailed database of containers and carriers
- Interactive container map with Street view
- Overview of scheduled and executed routes
- Waste collection route planning
- Citizen complaint database
- Fire alarm and tilt
Ultimately, it’s about making cities and businesses operate smarter to make the world a cleaner place.
