MAFRA leads the way for Smart Recycling in Portugal

At the beginning of July, Portugal celebrated an important breakthrough in its recycling efforts with the launch of the “MAFRA Reciclar a Valer + Rua a Rua” project.

This initiative, led by Sociedade Ponto Verde in collaboration with the Mafra Municipality, Tratolixo, Tetra Pak, and AIVE – Association of Packaging Glass Manufacturers, marks a new chapter in waste management in the country. 

What is “MAFRA Reciclar a Valer + Rua a Rua”? 

“MAFRA Reciclar a Valer + Rua a Rua” is the first project in Portugal that uses advanced RecySmart technology.

This innovative system allows the citizens of Mafra to be rewarded for properly recycling plastic bottles, metal cans, carton bricks and glass containers in smart bins. A total of 20 bins equipped with Candam’s RecySmart technology have been installed, divided into 10 for glass and 10 for light packaging. 

The devices characterize each deposited container, awarding points that can be exchanged for rewards. A key feature of the project is the integration of RecySmart with the Cartão Mais app, already existing in the municipality.

Through this app or the Cartão Mais card, citizens can connect to the bins and recycle, accumulating points in a simple and centralized way. These points can then be exchanged for discounts at local businesses. 

 

What do we expect from the future? 

The launch of “MAFRA Reciclar a Valer + Rua a Rua” is just the beginning. At Candam, together with our partners, we are exploring the possibility of expanding this system to other locations and sectors of the country, both public and private. We are proud to be able to contribute our “grain of sand” to help the Portuguese achieve their recycling goals and that is why we want to continue advancing on this path.

This joint effort highlights the importance of collaboration between different sectors to achieve common goals for the benefit of the planet.
